Olivia Wilde she opened up about navigating the onslaught of criticism she received for dating her now ex-girlfriend Harry styles given their 10-year age difference.
“It really pissed people off. It was crazy,” Wilde, 42, recalled on the Wednesday, June 17, episode of “Call Her Daddy.” a podcast. “I don’t know how much I understand you yet.”
Wilde began dating Styles, 32, in 2021 after meeting on the set of Don’t worry Dear— less than one year after the actress and her ex Jason SudeikisHe has two children with whom he lives, and they ended their marriage. Wilde’s connection raised eyebrows because of the power involved, their age difference and Wilde’s recent breakup. (Wilde has gone publicly deny any overlapping relationships.)
“I know it’s been around for a long time in our community, like, I understand it’s had very little to do with me,” Wilde admitted on Wednesday’s episode. “It’s something we should have done for women for a long time. Why? I don’t know. People were upset.”
Wilde, however, speculated that the backlash involved the fans’ “parasocial relationship” with the pop star.
“[It] it’s a very heavy burden and not something I envy, and she carries it with grace,” said Wilde, praising the rare styles without mentioning her name.” “I think that’s a huge burden that all those stars have to carry, and it’s impossible. I don’t know, it’s weird, because we had the best relationship ever, like, sweet and beautiful, and, actually, they’re very homely and kind and lovely.”
He continued, “I think we were in this little bubble and judgment didn’t enter that bubble, which was a miracle. [and] a real testament to us making that happen. I think people were crazy. It’s almost as if the excitement has driven them crazy.”
Wilde also recalled visiting Styles’ Love on Tour concerts, where other fans would give him a mixed eye for dancing and entertaining the crowd.
