Supergirl Stinks! Watch These 3 Great Female Action Movies Instead

Supergirl it stinks! Sorry, I know that seems useless and immature, but that was my first reaction after walking out of my screening of the second movie James Gunnrebooted DC universe.
Milly Alcock stars as Krypton’s titular heroine, and she’s the best – and only – good thing about it. The movie he’s in is rubbish, with a tired plot about family adoption, muddy visuals that try – but fail – to hide the janky CGI and a crippled villain whose name I can’t even remember. (Klurg? Klog? Krang? Who cares, he was lame!)
There’s no need to settle for this summer blockbuster slop when there’s plenty to watch at home from broadcasters like Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video.
If you’re in the mood for fun action movies with kick-ass heroines, ditch the spandex and stream these star-studded movies. Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, Bridget Fonda and a group of young men being slapped and punched in the face.
‘Lucy’ (2014)
Scarlett Johansson in Lucy.
Universal Pictures/Everett CollectionMilly Alcock is the best thing about him Supergirlbut that doesn’t make the movie worth watching. You need a compelling plot to draw viewers in, and Lucy has that in spades. Former Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson stars as Lucy, a young woman who unexpectedly gains superpowers such as telekinesis, telepathy and the inability to feel pain after unknowingly ingesting some experimental drugs. Hey, it happens.
As Lucy runs away from people who want to exploit her abilities, she develops additional special abilities such as super strength, agility and something called mental time travel. There is a downside to Lucy’s new superpower, though: she has less than 24 hours to live.
Directed by Luc Besson, Lucy it is completely stupid and irrational. It’s also brilliantly directed and accompanied by action scenes that are better than anything you’ll ever see Supergirl or many comic book movies. The film has an amazing ensemble cast Morgan Freeman like the kind professor who helps Lucy and Choi Min-sik as a South Korean crime lord who wants to kill Lucy before she can develop her new powers.
Lucy is streaming on Netflix.
‘Atomic Blonde’ (2017)

Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde.
Jonathan Prime. ©Focus Features/Courtesy The Everett CollectionYou can choose anywhere Charlize Theron action movie to watch and you will get your money’s worth and more. Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the greatest motion pictures of all time Italian work, Apex, The Old Guard again Aeon Flux they all bring the joy of the action you desire. But I’m going with Atomic Blonde, mostly because it has Theron giving James Bond a run for his martini as a sexy spy you don’t want to mess with.
A list containing the names of secret agents working in Berlin has been stolen, and it’s up to MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) to find it. When he arrives in Berlin, he meets David Percival (James McAvoy), his main point of contact, which would lead him to Aleksander Bremovych (Roland Moller), a KGB agent who thought he had a list. But Berlin in 1989 is full of dangerous people, and Lorraine isn’t sure who she can trust.
Atomic BlondeThe plot looks complicated, but it’s very simple once you get past all the smoke and mirrors. It is a fluid system of Objective: ImpossibleThe thing is, the tech-babble polish that makes that film so great has been stripped away. But Blonde it helps with the style, fully incorporating the neon colors and techno-dance synths of the established decade, and Theron, who is punched, kicked, shot, stabbed and thrown from multiple buildings. Somehow she survives all of that, and she believes it because she’s Charlize f***ing Theron.
Atomic Blonde airs on HBO Max.
‘Point of No Return’ (1993)

Bridget Fonda in Point of No Return.
Warner Bros./courtesy Everett CollectionMaggie Hayward (Bridget Fonda) he has nothing to lose. After killing a police officer during a botched robbery, he’s looking to spend the rest of his life behind bars – or worse. When a mysterious man named Bob (Gabriel Byrne) offers him a deal, he takes it – but he doesn’t understand that his life now belongs to the US government. Maggie becomes a trained assassin who must do what she’s told, which usually involves killing people. But despite her violent past, Maggie isn’t a killer, and soon she wants out of a deal that has no get-out clause.
A remake of the acclaimed 1990 French film La Femme Nikitathis american version is surprisingly better. That’s due to a combination of factors: Fonda’s deeply felt lead, which makes her mysterious killer tough but vulnerable; good points with Hans Zimmerthat makes the blood pump; and kinetic direction by John Badhamwho knows how to make a good action scene. The Point of No Return it’s almost forgotten now, but it’s a great example of a progressive remake of its source material.
The Point of No Return can be rented or purchased from Prime Video and other digital retailers.
