John Carlson Wants To Go Back East, But Which Teams Are The Best?

Jim Biringer of NHLRumors.com and Full Press Media joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio, The Point with Jake Hahn and Victoria Matiash, and was asked about John Carlson and where some of his best fits will be as he hits free agency and looks to return to the East.

NHL Rumors: Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, and Detroit Red Wings

Victoria Matish: “Speaking of relocation, one last quick thing from me, Jim, we just learned 10 minutes ago, that John Carlson will be testing the free agent market. He will not sign an extension with the Ducks. We understand that he wants to come back East. Where do you see the best fit?”

Jim Biringer: “A few teams, actually, I think a team like Florida could use him, right? He might be a good fit there, depending on the AAV. Obviously, there was an agreement at the trade deadline that they were working on, but the timing and the dollar amount weren’t what the team liked, so they decided to move on from him.

Tampa, too, if Darren Raddysh is going to be a free agent and is paid somewhere, if Tampa doesn’t want to go. I heard somewhere that the team could pay Raddysh up to $7 million per season, and if so, they might have to move on from him.

Philadelphia could be a landing spot. Pittsburgh would be a good fit. Think of all those years of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin going against Carlson. Carlson makes the jump to the Pittsburgh team, which would be a great addition to Kyle Dubas. Those are other groups.

Nashville Predators Make Trade and Will Retain Coaching Staff But Want to Improve

The Islanders could use him. The guards. There are many good fits for John Carlson in the Eastern Conference, especially if he wants to return to the East. I don’t see a meeting in Washington. That doesn’t make sense because if they would have kept him they would have signed him.

But so many good teams came out of the East for John Carlson, that his services are still playing power, and everything in the defensive area, is a really good addition. “

Jake Hahn: “And again, if you’re John Carlson, per se, you’re probably looking at the biggest potential here for money. I know he’s an aging defenseman, but he’s a guy with something to do in a talentless market and a rising cap.

I think it’s probably a perfect storm, and I think if you’re John Carlson and John Carlson’s agent, you’re saying, “Okay, maybe we should test the market, and we can get a pretty good deal here. Like Victoria said, he’s still a successful player playing high-level hockey. So, it’s exciting. It adds another thing to July 1 as we get closer to that.”

NHLRumors.com Note: As reported Tuesday, John Carlson will market. Also, if Carlson had stayed in Washington, they would have re-signed him to a reported two-year deal paying him $9 million per season, but the plan was to move on from Carlson.

NHL Rumors: NY Rangers, John Carlson, and Offseason NHL Trade Tiers

Although Anaheim is out of the question, he wants to return to the East. It will be interesting to see what the market demands from the aging player. Could Carlson be like Klingberg, and could he be overplaying his hand? There will be suitors, but at $10 million a season, that may be a long way off.
