The History of Madison Square Garden Weddings Before Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift again Travis Kelce they were not the first couple to marry inside New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Swift and Kelce announced their engagement in August 2025, after which they flirted about plans for their big day.

“I think marriage is what happens after that [my Life of a Showgirl promotional tour] in the planning scheme, but I’m really excited about it,” Swift said on the show The Graham Norton Show in October 2025. “I know it will be fun to plan because I think the only stressful weddings are the ones where you have little money and people are talking.”

In the months that followed, speculation arose that Swift planned to walk down the aisle at MSG on the 4th of July weekend in 2026. a number of delivery trucks were seen throwing decorations and food on the field.

Anyway, Swift and Kelce a “funny” wedding July 2026 was not the first time couples exchanged vows at MSG. Keep scrolling to look back at the history of the wedding venue:

Sly Stone and Kathy Silva

The “Everyday People” singer married actress Silva inside Madison Square Garden in June 1974 during Stone’s concert in front of a crowd of 23,000.

“When you fall in love like Sly and I do, you just go overboard and get married,” Silva gushed on Vogue at that time.

As for Stone, she told the media that they decided to get married during her show because of the son Sylvester Jr.

“I have a little boy now, and I don’t want him to be a liar when he says ‘dada,'” she laughed.

Stone and Silva, who initially called off their engagement while she was pregnant with their son, each wore Halston’s custom to the ceremony.

Marriage of the Church of Unity

The Unification Church held a group wedding in July 1982, where 4,000 followers were matched and married by the Reverend. Sun Myung Moon.

The New York Times reported at the time that the venue was carpeted in white and all 2,000 couples wore matching dresses. The grooms wore blue suits, the brides wore matching lace and satin dresses made by the church.

“It was a lot of fun. The wedding vows were a lot of fun,” the groom Bruce Burris he told The Timesseeing that he is planning to move in with his new bride, Sanae Tsuchidafollowed by a weekly wait of 40 days. “I think so, yes, I’m sure.”

Burris was matched with Tsuchida by church leaders, who met “just a few hours” before the ceremony.

The couple celebrates their 40th wedding anniversary in 2022.

“The men and women gathered here at this wedding have dedicated themselves to the highest level of love and service to God, to each other, and to all mankind,” said Moon. Press releasenoting that some of the couple’s children have just been “blessed” in their marriages this year.
