Attorney Dan Goldman, DN.Y., is giving his side of the story after a New York City coffee shop barred him from visiting the store and barred him from returning because of his support for Israel.

From CNN’s “Laura Coates Live” On Monday night, Goldman expressed his dismay at the situation involving Brooklyn’s Poetica Coffee last week, after the shop shared a surveillance photo of Goldman with an accompanying caption saying he was not welcome back.

“I had a great connection with the barista at the coffee shop,” Goldman told CNN’s Laura Coates. “She was wearing a hijab. I didn’t know, but she wasn’t going to be nice and let my daughter go and use the bathroom, and honestly I was so grateful for her kindness that I felt like I should buy a coffee – and I did, and I gave her a big tip.”

Goldman said the postings he saw online were very different from his actual interactions when he visited the store.

“It was the complete opposite of what I found out later, and I think, it shows a sad situation, without knowing, we could have had such a good relationship,” said Goldman. “Two people, obviously from different backgrounds, different beliefs, but that’s what America is and that’s what New York City is. That’s what I believe in.”

“And the idea of accusing a stranger of supporting the massacre, I mean it’s crazy. It’s crazy,” he continued. “Now, I might argue whether there is or not. But, come on, we’re better than this. And we need to be better than this.”

Goldman, who is Jewish, describes himself as a liberal Zionist and has been critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He opposes the idea that Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza, and his defense of Israel has angered the progressive left and could cost him his seat in Congress, a large Democratic seat that represents southern Manhattan and western Brooklyn.

Goldman criticized the equality of American Jews and the Israeli government throughout the country.

“I think it’s really dangerous when people start to associate the actions of the Israeli government with American Jews, which have nothing to do with what’s happening in Israel and the rise of anti-Semitism because of what’s happening in the Middle East, here in the United States, it’s really dangerous, and it’s growing,” Goldman said.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Poetica Coffee said Goldman would have been fired if the staff had known about him at the time and added that his order was returned.

“Hey Congressman Dan Goldman, we see you stopped by our store today to drink coffee. Do you realize it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having trouble telling the difference?” the article says, discussing Goldman’s support for Israel and previous allegations that the Jewish state has carried out massacres of Palestinians during the ongoing war in Gaza.

“Look, here at Poetica, we don’t employ racists, fascists, homophobes, genocidals, or anyone in between,” the post continued. “Too bad we didn’t see it right away, even if we fired you. We gave you your money back—we don’t need your money (probably from AIPAC anyway). Enjoy your loss on Tuesday. Don’t ever come to Poetica.”

Goldman initially responded to the post on Instagram, commenting, “I apologize for seeing this post. The barista couldn’t have been nicer to me and my 7-year-old daughter – letting her use the bathroom even though we hadn’t bought anything. I made sure to buy a coffee in return for her kindness. I hope she at least makes sure she gets a decent tip.”

The store later responded to Goldman’s comments, adding that it was the barista’s idea to refund his purchase and vowing to vote for the congressman, who is currently facing a Democratic challenge from former City Manager Brad Lander, a fierce critic of Israel.

The coffee shop incident underscores the left’s heated debate over the Jewish state. Support for democracy has declined in the country in recent years.

This week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that authorities have opened an investigation into Poetica Coffee over allegations of “refusal to mockery” against Goldman.

Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon added that federal law prohibits places of public accommodation — including coffee shops — from discriminating against patrons on the basis of race, religion, or national origin, and that refusing service may violate anti-discrimination laws.

“In fact, it looks like a cafe where the door doesn’t close for anyone, where tea is poured before anyone asks who you are,” the website said. “The guest is sacred because the act of welcoming is how the community keeps itself healthy.”

“Not as a customer. Not as an employee,” the website added. “As one who has come and deserves to be welcomed.”
