Inside Royal Family Rift Split Ahead of Harry’s Visit

It looks like it’s going to be a summer to remember Prince Harry. In July, the former royal will cross the lake to mark the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games with his wife, Meghan Markleand their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, respectively. Harry has returned to England several times since moving to the US in 2020, but it will be the first time Meghan and the children return since 2022.
Despite their differences, King Charles III invited the family of four to stay in the royal house during their visit. “He made it clear that their comfort and safety is a priority,” said the source. “Everyone is full of excitement, saying that this could be the first step in repairing the relationship completely.”
The olive branch seems like a good sign, but there is no doubt that the royal family as a whole is still broken. And the biggest rift is between Harry and his older brother, Prince Williamand Charles and his younger brother Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor (formerly Prince Andrew). William, 44, is furious with Harry, 41, for airing the royal family’s dirty laundry in his 2023 memoir, Saveand in TV interviews, when Charles, 77, stripped Andrew, 66, of his title and eventual royal position because of his relationship with a convicted sex offender. Jeffrey Epstein.
For Charles and William – who will succeed their father to the throne – their loyalty to the crown makes things difficult. “This is a family that for many years work has come first, and I think it’s a very difficult balance, because there are people involved and in the end, their siblings are involved,” said the royal expert. Emily Nash. “You don’t want to turn your back on them completely, but at the same time, you have to protect the institution.”
The brothers who have closed now do not communicate with each other. “There is no direct communication, no texts, no phone calls, no emails, nothing,” said the source. While discussing history (“only two people alive know what their childhood was like,” the source explained) and grief over their late mother, Princess Dianaand concerns about his father’s health (Charles revealed he had cancer in 2024), there is no “movement” towards reconciliation. “Harry is not Andrew, and he never will be, but William is not ready [to make up].”
William has not forgiven Harry for speaking out against The Firm in Save2022 Netflix documentaries, Harry and Meghanand in his 2021 TV interview with Meghan. “[That] it creates a clear, permanent record,” the source explained. [TV] interview, and the broadcast Harry brought to the royal family in his memoir,” it noted Christopher Andersenthe author of Kate!: The Courage, Grace, and Strength of the Woman Who Will Be Queen.
Harry, on the other hand, has his own trust issues. A second source tells the story Us Weekly is concerned about “the stories being planted in the UK press that are anti-Meghan and Harry and pro-Charles and William.” The father of two was previously accused Princess Kate and William’s press office for leaking negative stories about him and Meghan to British media outlets to sway public opinion. “That concern is not something that will go away,” said the second source.
The first source believes that the brothers are still upset about their feud. “Harry misses William more than he misses the ‘centre.’ You miss being with someone who doesn’t need to be explained,” said the source, adding that they believe William feels the same way, even if he doesn’t say it directly. “William’s wish [to see Harry] he is at a stage where he has not given permission to do anything yet.” Nash adds: “I think there’s probably sadness on both sides, but this is the situation they’re in, and they’ve got to make the most of it.”

According to Andersen, the siblings are less likely to meet when Harry is in town. “Is there hope? Yes,” Andersen said, adding that it was possible “the Welsh and the Sussexes will avoid each other.” Nash echoes that there are “no plans” for Harry and William to cross paths. “There’s no communication at the moment. It’s very painful for everyone involved, but they’re both very busy moving on with their lives, and I think Harry has a lot to do with his father, so maybe he’ll focus his efforts there for now.”
Kate and Meghan followed their husbands’ lead. The first source says: “They are waiting for William and Harry to decide what will happen,” said the first source, adding, “Kate would like her children to have a relationship with their cousins, and she is interested in seeing the children. But she will respect William’s decision.”
There is talk that William and Harry will mend fences – eventually. “They will work things out in the future,” the first source said. (As for hooking up on the 29th anniversary of their mother’s death in August, a source says they are “grieving over the breakup.”) In a June 22 interview with The TimesWilliam and Harry’s former private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton he predicted a possible thaw between the future king and his younger brother, saying, “I loved you and I love you very much [Harry]. He has great redeeming qualities, and I am an optimist.”
Charles stuck between his sons. Andersen says: “He feels like he’s caught in the crossfire. But if he has to choose a side, you sympathize with him.” [more] and William.” Nash says Charles and Kate’s cancer battles have tied them together. (Kate revealed she was sorry in early 2025.) “That included Charles and William,” she said.
Harry hopes to see his father during his journey. Father and son last met in September 2025, spending about an hour together at Charles’ Clarence House residence. While the first source tells Us Charles is in charge of security issues for this visit, and Andersen insists that the topic remains a sensitive one. Harry lost his first court case for having taxpayer-funded security while in the UK with Meghan and her children in May 2025; at the time, he said he could not “see a world where I would bring my wife and children to the UK” without protection. However, in January 2026, the Send an email on Sunday reported that Harry and his family will be allowed government-sponsored security during the trip to his home country after a new risk assessment from the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royal and Public Figures (RAVEC).

“Even if they clarify all the details, there is no guarantee that the king will spare a few minutes to meet with Harry and his family,” Andersen said. The first source says: “They are trying to put everyone’s plans together, the king wants to spend time with Archie and Lilibet.
William understands his father’s desire to maintain a relationship with Harry and his grandchildren. “He wouldn’t stand in the way of that,” the source noted. “There are mixed feelings about him seeing Harry given their history, but William’s feelings for Harry and his father’s happiness are two separate things, so he won’t get involved.” However, Andersen believes that unless William “signs a full reconciliation, Charles will likely be moving on – if he sees Harry at all.”
Charles and his younger brother – who was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct while in government office – had not been in touch for months. (Andrew was released from jail hours after being questioned.) “Charles called Andrew [when he stripped him of his titles] again [let him know he] there was no choice. They haven’t spoken since then,” said the first source, adding, “they don’t have a relationship.” Nash agreed, he said Us The relationship between the brothers is probably “incredibly troubled.”
Like William and Harry, his siblings also had a hard time. “Andrew can make Charles laugh,” said the first source. “Andrew was loud, crazy, when Charles was measured and refined.” Charles found Andrew’s scandalous behavior exhausting. (Andrew was accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old woman at the time Virginia Giuffre; they receive an undisclosed amount in 2022. He died by suicide in 2025.) “Charles does not agree with Andrew’s choice and is devastated by this scandal,” said the source. “It was like death.”
Charles feels that Andrew is a serious threat to the monarchy. Andersen says: “I don’t think anyone believed the king would take such drastic action, but it’s to his credit that he did,” Andersen says, adding, “Andrew’s downfall was inevitable. Nash adds: “Charles has come out in support of the victims, and that sends a powerful message.

Nash said Us that Charles and William are “locked in” on decisions about Andrew’s removal from royal life. “They fully agree on this,” he says. “I think there have been times in the past where maybe one or the other doesn’t see things the same way, but they’re both firm about it.” They took the steps they needed to take.”
Andrew – who was evicted by Charles from his long-time home at Royal Lodge and now lives at Marsh Farm on Charles’ Sandringham Estate – lives far away. “He stopped answering many calls,” said the first source. “He travels a lot and asked someone to send him his model soldiers from storage, so he was [keeping busy with] hobbies.”
The royal family is clearly far from exempt from family drama. “They may be royalty, but they’re still family, and the power is the same whether you’re a king or a coal miner,” Andersen said, pointing out that even Queen Elizabeth and his sister, Princess Margaretthey are famous for their differences. The author also notes that The Firm is made up of several camps that have long been competing for attention and money to support their various causes. She explains: “Of course, their egos are tied up in all of this. “Charles hated being overshadowed by Diana, and Harry and Meghan decided they weren’t going to live out their days playing a second William and Kate movie.”
Now, Charles is in grave danger. She is caught between her broken relationship with Andrew, her strained relationship with Harry and the constant conflict between her two sons. “He wants to be seen as a powerful king,” Andersen said. “He really has to be the glue that holds everything together.”
