USA Powerlifting, once at the mercy of a trans athlete, supports the SCOTUS decision: ‘The law has played a role in the science’

USA Powerlifting “welcomed” a Supreme Court ruling that upheld state laws regarding transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.

The Supreme Court ruled, 6-3, in favor of states that had sued natural men to gain access to girls’ sports.

USA Powerlifting found itself embroiled in a fight when it was sued in 2021 by lifter JayCee Cooper after Cooper was banned from the women’s team three years ago.

And after Tuesday’s historic decision, it’s inspired.

“The highest court in the land has confirmed what we’ve been arguing for six years: protecting women’s sports is common sense and not discriminatory,” said former USAPL president Larry Maile in a statement. “The law has caught up with science and now Minnesota is outside the law. It’s not in line with the US Supreme Court, it’s full of public opinion and sports governing bodies around the world.”

A district court ruled in 2023 that the agency discriminated against Cooper, but after an appeal and an appeal by Cooper, the Minnesota Court of Appeals ultimately ruled that Cooper was not discriminated against.

Now, more than half of US states have been empowered to enforce protections for women’s sports without fear of legal challenge.

However, there are still 23 states that do not have such laws, and some of those states have laws to protect runners in girls’ sports.

President Donald Trump has been threatening to freeze federal funding to states that do not comply with his order. Trump froze the money in Maine, but a judge ruled that the money must be returned. But now, those states are protected by law.
