The Love Hypothesis’ Lili Reinhart, Tom Bateman for book changes

Lili Reinhart again Tom Bateman they mock their way of adapting Ali Hazelwooda novel The Love Hypothesis – and revealed that there will be major changes to the book.

“It felt – as much as possible – like a timeless romantic comedy. Sometimes they feel very sad in 2026. Those I answer to feel timeless or from the ’90s and I have something for them that feels like that. [dated],” Reinhart, 29, explained at Obsessed Fest on Saturday, June 27.

Reinhart, who plays Olive, talked about how the film compares to the novel.

“That’s what the script managed to feel like to me – while maintaining the integrity of both characters and doing the book justice,” he commented. “Obviously, the importance of the book and the source of the story [is something we thought about].”

He continued: “We wanted to be completely respectful of that and I think our writer Sarah [Rothschild] he really did. The heart of the book is in the film.”

Bateman, 37, couldn’t help but admit after bringing Adam to life, adding, “It’s really hard when you’re adapting something to make a movie because everyone who loves the book has an idea of ​​what these characters are going to be like, what this world is going to be like and every moment of the story. You can only tell one.”

Based on Hazelwood’s first novel, The Love Hypothesis is pursuing a Ph.D. candidate and a professor at Stanford University pretending to be in a relationship.

“Every single person involved in this had a deep love for this book and doing justice to everyone you love, the amazing cast and the world. And who can say it better than a group of people who love it so much?” Bateman continued. “People really liked this book. This book was always edited. I remember, Lili gave me a set book and we would read parts of it before filming the scene.”

Before Hazelwood was released The Love Hypothesis as a book, it was originally a fan fiction story about Rey and Kylo Ren from the youth star Wars movies. Bateman’s wife, Daisy RidleyRey played the opposite Adam Driver in the sci-fi trilogy before serving as the inspiration for Reinhart’s character, Olive.

Ridley, 34, was later asked about the connection during an interview Collider in 2023, to which he replied, “I mean, honestly, for anybody to write a book is very impressive, let alone a New York Times bestseller, let alone something inspired by something that I was a part of. That’s very exciting.”

He continued: “So, thank you, if anyone is reading this. Whoever wrote The Love Hypothesis and Hurricane Wars. Wow. F***ing cool.”
